Mikitarian and Bailey take down the wins for the NEMA Lites Double Header Race Weekend

This past weekend, the NEMA Lites traveled to Star Speedway on Saturday and Hudson Speedway for the Jim O’Brien Memorial on Sunday for their double header race weekend.

The NEMA Lites took the track for their 25 lap feature event as the sun set behind the trees. Kyle Ferrucci in the #99 alongside Trent Goodrow in the Keller Motorsports #44, led the field to a nonstop 25 lap race. As Ferrucci led the field into turn one while Goodrow and Ben Mikitarian in the #9 battled for second coming out of turn two and down the backstretch. But coming out of turn four, Mikitarian was able to take second over Goodrow. Mikitarian was on the back bumper of Ferrucci on the front stretch on lap two and took the low line going into turn one to take over first followed by Ferrucci and Goodrow.

Once Mikitarian took the lead, he began to extend his lead by a couple of car lengths as the rest of the field remained in a tight group. While on lap 6, Kyle Valeri was able to work his way into the top 3 over Goodrow. On the following lap, Valeri was then able to make a move to take second over Ferrucci. Valeri was now on the move to try and close the gap between him and first place, Mikitarian.

On lap 8, Jake Trainor in the Matt Seymour Racing #29, worked his way into the top three over Ferrucci. Trainor now had his eyes set on second place Valeri.

Over the next several laps, Chake Locke in the Matt Seymour Racing #1, worked his way from his ninth place starting position and was on the back bumper of Ferrucci looking to make the pass for fourth. While on lap 15, Locke was able to get a drive and take over fourth.

As the field spread out amongst themselves, Mikitarian continued to drive away from the rest of the field and held nearly a straightaway lead over Valeri and Trainor. While Trainor worked to close the gap between him and second place Valeri, he worked up to his back bumper, but as the checkered flag flew for Mikitarian on lap 25, Valeri was able to hold off Trainor to round out the podium.

In a post race interview with Ben Mikitarian, he commented on his win, “It’s great to get a win at Star Speedway especially rebounding after getting a flat while leading at Waterford half way through the race. It’s good to come back here and get a win. Just want to thank my dad, he puts in a lot of work and to get this win on Father’s Day weekend.”

To round out the top 10 were strong finishes by Ben Mikitarian #9, Kyle Valeri #17, Jake Trainor #29, Chase Locke #1, Kyle Ferrucci #99, Ryan Macartney #9M, Randy Cabral #47, Trent Goodrow #44, Paul Scally #30, Mike Pernesiglio #28.

The stars and cars of the NEMA Lite division, quickly regrouped early Sunday morning after a late Saturday Night race for the Jim O’Brien Memorial 50 lap feature at Hudson Speedway.

As the NEMA Lites took the track on Sunday afternoon, Trent Goodrow in the Keller Motorsports #44 alongside Mike Pernesiglio in the #28, led the field to the green flag. Goodrow led the pack going into turn one, as Pernesiglio raced along on the outside groove, until turn three where Goodrow cleared Pernesiglio. On the second lap, Ryan Locke in the #16, took the low line going into turn one, to take over the second position, while on the same lap, going into turn three, Joey Bailey in the #1, took the low line to take over third over Pernesiglio.

On lap 3, a battle for fourth occurred between Pernesiglio and Chase Locke in the Nick Poe Racing #2, as Locke #2 took the low line going into turn #3 alongside Pernesiglio on the outside, but Pernesiglio was able to get a drive coming out of turn four to hold onto fourth.

On the following lap, Jake Trainor in the Matt Seymour Racing #29, took the low line going into turn three to take fifth over Pernesiglio.

With just five laps down, Goodrow continued to lead over, Locke #16, and Bailey as they began to separate and create a half a straightaway gap over the rest of the field. As Trainor took fourth over Locke #2, he now set his eyes on closing the gap for third.

Over the next few laps, Goodrow, held a comfortable lead of fourth car lengths over Locke #16 and Bailey. On lap 15, Bailey was on the back bumper of Locke #16, looking to set-up and make the pass, while on the following lap, going into turn one, Bailey took the low line from Locke #16 to take over second. While that door was open, Trainor was able to also capitalize going down the backstretch to take fourth over Locke #16.

On lap 20, as Goodrow continued to lead the pack, Bailey was able to close in on him and close the gap to be within striking distance. As the leaders began to catch up to lapped traffic on lap 23, Bailey saw an opening entering into turn three and looked to the inside of Goodrow, but Goodrow was able to get a drive off of three to maintain the lead.

Over the next several laps as the leaders navigated through lapped traffic, on lap 27, Bailey with a crossover move going down the backstretch took the low line going into turn three to take the lead over Goodrow followed by Trainor. On the following lap, Trainor, coming out of turn two was able to get a good run going down the backstretch to take second over Goodrow.

Once Bailey took the lead, he didn’t look back, as he continued to grow his lead by a couple of car lengths over Trainor and Goodrow. While, fourth place, Kyle Valeri in the Valeri Motorsports #17 and fifth, Randy Cabral in the #47 worked to close the straightaway distance from them and the front pack. Over the next several laps, Valeri and Cabral battled for fourth, but eventually on lap 40, Valeri was able to pull away from Cabral and maintain the fourth position.

As the laps began to tick off, on lap 41, as Bailey navigated through lapped traffic, this allowed for Trainor to close the gap between the two while Goodrow held a comfortable third about half a straightaway behind the leaders.

Unfortunately on lap 47, a caution flag was flown for third place Goodrow, that would end his race.

As the field re-racked and stacked for 3 laps remaining, Bailey alongside Trainor led the field back to the green flag. Bailey led the field into turn one as Trainor raced alongside him on the outside groove. On lap 48, going down the backstretch, Trainor attempted a crossover move and diamond the corner coming out of four to take the low line from Bailey, but Bailey was able to hold off Trainor. As the checkered flag flew on lap 50 for Bailey, followed by Trainor, and Valeri to round out the podium for the Jim O’Brien Memorial.

In a victory lane interview, Bailey commented on his win, “What a whirlwind this weekend has been, making a last minute decision to jump into a car I’ve never run before. It has been a while since we have been in victory lane. 50 laps is a long time if you think about it and when you have a caution with 2 to go and when you have the best in the business right next to you, it makes it much more overwhelming. But we finally parked it.”

To round out the top 10 were strong finishes by: Joey Bailey #1, Jake Trainor #29, Kyle Valeri #17, Paul Scally #30, Randy Cabral #47, Dylan Coutu #53, Ryan Locke #16, Mike Pernesiglio #28, Matt O'Brien #61, and Tiana Kibbe #94.

The NEMA Lites take the next weekend off, but are back racing at Seekonk Speedway on Wednesday, June 26th for Open Wheel Wednesday for another 50 lap action packed race. We hope to see you there!

Ethan Dion in the #8 alongside Brayden Egan in the Egan Motorsports #59 led the field to 60 green flag laps. Going into turn one, Dion, led the field while Tiana Kibbe in the Kibbe Racing #94 and Egan battled for second as the two raced side by side going down the backstretch and into turn three. On the following lap going down the front stretch, Paul Scally in the #30, looked to the outside of Egan and remained on his back corner until turn three where Scally was able to make the pass for third over Egan. Scally now had his eyes set on second place Kibbe while Dion continued to lead the field by nearly five car lengths.

Coming down the front stretch on lap 4, a battle for second between Kibbe and Scally occurred as Scally once again took the highline going into one and would drive up alongside Kibbe going into turn three but Kibbe was able to hold off Scally. As Scally ducked back behind Kibbe going down the backstretch, just as 3 car battle for second occurred between Kibbe, Scally, and Randy Cabral in the #74. While on lap 7, Scally was able to take the high line coming out of turn two to take second. On the same lap, Cabral was able to get a run going out of turn three to take over third from Kibbe going down the front stretch.

Over the next several laps, Scally was on the chase to close the gap between him and first place Dion. On lap 11, Scally on the move, was able to work the high groove and was on the back bumper of Dion attempting to take over first. But Dion was able to continue his run and hold Scally off and regain a four car lengths gap between the two.

While Dion continued to lead over Scally, Cabral, and Kibbe. On lap 12, we saw a battle occur for fifth place between Egan and Kyle Valeri in the Valeri Motorsports #17. While going into turn three, Valeri took the high groove to drive up alongside Egan going down the front stretch where Valeri was able to take over fifth going into turn one. Valeri, now on the move, looked to the outside of Kibbe to make the pass on lap 16 and on the following lap, going into turn one, Valeri was able to take over the fourth position.

As several laps passed, Dion continued to lead the pack followed by Scally and Cabral and on lap 21, Scally once again worked up to the back bumper of Dion. On the following lap, going down the backstretch Scally drove up alongside Dion, to take the low line going into turn three to take the lead going down the front stretch to lead lap 23.

Once Scally took the lead, he began to drive away, Dion was now in a battle for second between him and Cabral. As Cabral took the low line going into turn one on the following lap, to take second over Dion. Cabral, now set his eyes on closing the half a straightaway gap between him and first place Scally.

Over the next few laps, as Scally continued to lead over Cabral, Dion, and Valeri, we saw a tight battle for the fifth through eighth positions from Kibbe, Egan, Joey Bailey in the #2, and Dylan Coutu in the Redline Motorsports #53 as they all raced nose to tail.

As the field spread out amongst themselves, on lap 30, Scally extended his lead to nearly a straightway over Cabral and Dion, as Valeri was on the move and tracking down Dion.

On lap 33, going down the backstretch, Bailey took the low line away from Egan going into turn three to take over the sixth position and was now on the move to break into the top five over Kibbe. While on the next lap, Coutu was able to take the low line going into turn one to take over seventh over Egan.

While on lap 38, Valeri had now worked his way to the back bumper of third place, Dion, and going down the backstretch, drove up alongside Dion where the two raced side by side, but going down the front stretch, Valeri took over third by his front nose.

As Scally held nearly a four second lead over Cabral, Valeri worked to close the distance between him and second place.

Over the next several laps, we saw a tight battle once again for fifth between Kibbe and Bailey, as Bailey was on the back bumper of Kibbe and eventually on lap 43, Bailey was able to take the low line coming out of turn two to take over the fifth position.

While on lap 45, Coutu was able to get a run going into turn one, to drive up alongside Kibbe for sixth, where the two raced side by side going down the backstretch, but Coutu was able to continue his run to take over sixth.

Coutu and Scally Take the Checkered Flags for the Shane Hammond Memorial

May 30, 2024

Waterford, CT- This past Saturday, the Mighty NEMA Midgets and Lites gathered at the New London- Waterford Speedbowl in honor of Shane Hammond.

The Shane Hammond Believe Foundation, has changed the way drivers, clubs & tracks think about safety. Restraints, helmets on track officials, full containment seats, extra cushion in the walls just to name a few. Deb Glockner Marvuglio, Shane Hammond’s mother, commented, “I need to thank my family, Shane's friends and racing colleagues who continue to support me and my safety mission and who remind me how special Shane was…I was overwhelmed by the love and support at the track and excited to witness new winners this year with exciting racing! Thank you to Dylan who designed the memorial t-shirts. Just feeling blessed, Thank you all.”

The NEMA Lites took the track as the sun began to set. Tiana Kibbe in the Kibbe Racing #94 alongside Ethan Dion in the #8 composed the front row and led the field to the green flag for 37 action packed laps around the Speedbowl. Kibbe and Dion raced side by side for the first lap but would maintain the lead with Dion and Ben Mikitarian in the #9 on her back bumper. On lap three, going into turn one, Mikitarian took the low line to take over the first position and began to extend his lead by a few car lengths. Then going into turn three, Joey Bailey in the Matt Seymour Racing #2 took the low line to take over second.

On lap 4, going into turn one, Dion took the low line to take over third. On the same lap, entering into turn three, Dylan Coutu in the Redline Motorsports #53, navigated his way into the 4th position.

An early race caution was thrown on the track on lap 5, as the field restacked and racked for a double file restart. Mikitarian alongside Bailey led the field back to the green flag. Mikitarian, jumped to the lead followed by Bailey, Coutu, Ryan Macartney in the #9M, and Dion to round out the top 5.

On lap 8, starting from his 12th place starting position, Randy Cabral in the #47, worked his way into the top 5 over Dion. Over the next several laps, Mikitarian continued his lead by nearly half a straightaway over Bailey. Coutu, running in the 3rd position, was now on the back bumper of Bailey setting up to take over second when he took the low line going into turn one. The two raced side by side going down the backstretch and going into turn three, but Coutu was able to get a drive coming out of turn four to take over second on lap 11. Coutu now had his eyes set on Mikitarian and worked to close the half a straightaway gap between the two.

As the laps began to tick down, on lap 19, Coutu was able to reel in Mikitarian and was now on his back bumper. While going into turn three, Coutu showed Mikitarian his nose and was able to take the low line from Mikitarian to take over and lead lap 20. Once Coutu took the lead, he never looked back, as he began to drive away from the rest of the field to create nearly half a straightaway lead.

On lap 23, as Coutu retained his lead, Bailey took 2nd over Mikitarian and began to work at closing the gap between him and Coutu. As a battle for fourth began between Macartney and Cabral, going down the backstretch. On the following lap, Cabral was able to get a run going off turn two to take over fourth. Soon after, unfortunately, a caution was thrown for Mikitarian, running third at the time, for a flat tire that would end his race.

The field then re-racked for a double file restart with Coutu leading the field back to the green flag for 13 laps remaining. Coutu once again jumped to the lead over Bailey and Macartney. But continuing on his charge through the field, Cabral was determined to take over third as he kept Macartney within striking distance. While coming out of turn two on lap 26 Cabral drove up alongside Macartney to take over third. Cabral now set his eyes on second place Bailey as he worked to close the five car length gap between the two.

Over the next several laps, Coutu stretched his lead over Bailey by nearly a straightaway. With two laps remaining, Cabral was able to work the highline of the track to close the gap between him and Bailey and was now on his back bumper.

On lap 37, as the checkered flag flew for Coutu, who dominated the race from lap 20, Cabral drove up alongside Bailey at an attempt for a last corner pass but Bailey edged out Cabral to take second by his front nose.

After an action packed race, in a victory lane interview, Coutu commented on his win, “I really wanted to win this one, at my home track, Waterford. After a lot of upsets here, to finally win here is truly amazing.”

Starting from his 12th place starting position, to round out the podium for 3rd was hard charger Randy Cabral.  After his race, he commented, “I have to thank Deb and everything she does for  keeping Shane’s memory alive, Shane was my best friend and this is very important to me.”

On lap one of the 25 lap feature, Scally jumped to the lead going into turn one followed by Dylan Rock in the Rock Racing #49 and Randy Cabral in the Bertrand Motorsports #74.

Over the next several laps as the field started to spread out amongst themselves, we saw a battle shape out between fourth place, Mike Horn in the #93 and fifth place, Avery Stoehr in the Bertrand Motorsports #39. On lap 5, Stoehr, now on the back bumper of Horn going down the front stretch, took the low line from Horn to take over the 4th position. Stoehr now set his eyes on Cabral and began to reel him in and close the half a straightaway distance between the two.

While Scally extended his lead over Rock by a straightaway, Stoehr worked the high groove to close the gap between him and third place Cabral. On lap 13, Stoehr took the low line going down the front stretch but Cabral was able to keep his momentum going into turn one where the two raced side by side. Going down the backstretch, Cabral was able to hold off hard charging Stoehr to hold onto 3rd. But the battle was not over yet, Cabral took the low line from Stoehr going into turn one on the next lap, while Stoehr took the familiar high line where he was able to get a drive off of turn two to take over third going down the back stretch.

Over the next 11 laps, as the field spread out amongst themselves, in a dominating and skillful performance, Scally was able to extend his lead by half a lap to take the checkered flag over Rock and Stoehr.

In a victory lane interview, Scally commented on his win. “I couldn’t do this without my family and friends here tonight. I was motivated after not being able to take the green flag in the Lite race earlier, and just wanted to run from these guys.”

Granite State Derby at Lee USA Speedway

Valeri Earns His First Career NEMA Lite Win!

Lee, NH (May 27,2023) -

The Northeast Midget Association celebrated a monumental Memorial Day weekend.  NEMA not only recognized their 70th season but also for the second year in a row, NEMA celebrated a first time career winner.

After a couple of off weekends, the NEMA Lites traveled to the Lee USA Speedway for the first time this season for the Granite State Derby.

NEMA Announcer Pete Falconi announced the stars and cars of the division, as the drivers lined up and saluted their fans for the famous four-wide parade lap.

The drivers realigned to their starting positions as Jeremey Utley in the #23 led the field to the green flag for 25 fast laps. Going into turn one, Utley, Drew Eldridge in the #55, Alby Ovitt in the Parker Brother’s Racing #20 went three wide and Ovitt would take the lead going down the backstretch. After the first lap was completed, Ovitt went on to gain half a straightaway lead over Utley but coming to the close of the second lap, there was an early race caution on the field that brought drivers back to a double file lineup.

As the field was brought back to green flag racing with one lap complete, Ovitt jumped to the lead followed by Kyle Valeri in the Valeri Motorsports #17, and Utley. Going into turn three, Ovitt would begin to stretch out his lead by one second over Valeri. At the close of the second lap, coming down the front stretch, the battle for positions 3-6 took form between Dylan Coutu in the Redline Motorsports #53, Avery Stoehr in the Parker Brothers Racing #10, PJ Stergios in the Seymour Racing #4, and Utley. Stoehr then chose the high line going into turn one to battle with Stergios for the third position, Coutu along with Joey Bailey in the Scrivani Racing #21, followed close behind.

On lap 5 the top 6 began to spread out as Coutu, Bailey, and Danny Cuigini in Jim O’Brien & Son’s Engineering #16, would take over the fourth through sixth positions.

By lap 9, Ovitt had a 5 car length advantage over Valeri but nearly 2 laps later, on lap 11, Valeri closed the gap and was on the back bumper of Ovitt.

On lap 15, the leaders started to encounter lap traffic that would play to the advantage of Valeri and by lap 17, Valeri would seize the coveted lead position from Ovitt, accelerating to a near certain victory.

However, as the field and fans have come to expect with this hard fought field of contenders, a late race caution on lap 19 would again reset the field, erasing the hard fought lead of Valeri and bring the field back to a double file restart.

With 5 laps remaining, Valeri led the field back to green while Ovitt, Coutu, and Stergios went three wide going into turn two competing for the second position. As they raced their way down the backstretch, drivers made their way back to two-wide formation,Coutu attempted to take second from Ovitt by taking the low line but was quickly countered as Ovitt regained position driving back around Coutu going into turn two.

As the white flag waved over Lee USA Speedway, signaling the final lap for the NEMA Lites in the 2023 Granite State Derby, Valeri had firmly secured his lead over Ovitt, en route to his first career win. Valeri’s first place win would be followed by strong finishes by both Ovitt and Coutu.

In an after race interview in victory lane, Kyle commented on his first win, “Words cannot express what I’m feeling right now…this feeling is indescribable. This has been one of my dreams to win one of these races and park it right here and that dream came true today.”

Peter Valeri, father of Kyle, commented, “It’s awesome that Kyle got his first win. It’s a whole different feeling when your son wins versus when your driver wins. We built a new car over the winter and it really paid off”

Rounding out the top 10 were strong finished by: Valeri (#17) followed by Ovitt (#20), Coutu (#53), Stergios (#4), Bailey (#21), Stoehr (#10), Paul Scally (#30), Drew Eldridge (#55), Brayden Egan (#59)

The NEMA Midgets will begin their season opener along with the NEMA Lites at the New London Waterford Speedbowl for the Shane Hammond Memorial on Saturday, June 10th.

Duel @ The Dog

Winchester, NH (May 6, 2023)– The Nema Lites began their 2023 season at Monadnock Speedway for JDV Productions 2nd Annual Duel at the Dog.

Prior to the drop of the green flag, the Lites formed the memorable missing man tribute in honor of Drew Forono, a nine time NEMA champion and winner of over 100 races throughout his racing career.

As sun fell upon the speedway, Chris Vose in the #3 led the strong field of 19 cars to the green flag for 25 fast, competitive laps around the track. From the outside pole position, Tiana Kibbe in the Kibbe Racing #94 would take the lead going into turn one and would lead the first couple of laps until Danny Cuigini in the #16, Jim O’Brien & Son’s Engineering Stealth, took the lead on lap 3 and never looked back. Following close in tow to Cugini, was Todd Bertrand in the #48.

In an early race restart on lap 5, Cugini got loose going into turn one and Bertrand would capitalize on this. But Cugini would gather this and drive hard into turn four to retake the lead. By lap 7, Cugini led the field by almost two car lengths followed by Bertrand. Following close behind was Joey Bailey, in the Scrivani Racing #21, as Avery Stoehr, in the Parker Brothers Racing #10 was closing the gap between him and Bailey.

On lap 10, Alby Ovitt, in the Parker Brothers Racing #20, worked his way from his 15th starting position into the top 5. From here teammates, Ovitt and Stoehr would battle for numerous laps.

By lap 14, the top 5 drivers closed the distance between one another and started to encounter lap traffic. They would navigate the field until a late restart on lap 18, where Cuigini would take off with the lead once again. Following close behind, Bailey, Stoehr, and Ovitt would contend for the third position.

By lap 22, Cuigini had nearly half a straightaway lead over Bertrand, the largest lead of the afternoon. While Bailey, Stoehr, and Ovitt went three wide down the front stretch for a competitive last few laps.

In a tight battle with only 2 laps remaining, Stoehr went on to take over the third place, followed by Ovitt, and Bailey.

“The car was great right out of the box, the team had it hooked up. Really glad to put the new team in victory lane.” Cugini expressed, “It’s always good to have your friends up front battling hard and I got real loose on a couple restarts and just had my foot in it to bring it back.
